You will need henna paste, cotton swabs or a brow brush and alcohol wipes. Select a discrete area on the client’s body, such as on the inner elbow. Clean the area with an alcohol wipe to remove any oils or dirt that could interfere with the test.

Using a cotton swab, or clean henna brush, apply a small amount of henna paste to the cleaned area. Allow the henna to dry naturally. This usually takes about 10 minutes. Remember, to instruct the client to keep the patch area dry and undisturbed for 24-48 hours, to give the product enough time to react if there is an allergen present. During this period, the client should monitor the area for any signs of redness, itching, swelling, or other adverse reactions.

Always make a record of your clients’ patch test date and results should you ever need it for insurance purposes.

Evaluating Results

After the observation period, assess the test area for any signs of an allergic reaction.If there is no reaction, it is generally safe to proceed with the henna brow application. If there is any sign of a reaction, advise the client to avoid henna and suggest alternative brow tinting methods.
